Groups to Develop Russian Multimedia Archives

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) together with the Federal Archival Service of Russia and Abamedia plan to develop Russian Archives Online at www.russianarchives.com. The archives are a pilot project that seek to provide Internet access to multimedia works in several Russian archives, as well as preserve those works. The project will provide an Internet-based medium for searching, viewing and the licensing of audiovisual materials held by the Russian State Archives, as well as by other archives and museums in Russia. Access to the archives' online electronic catalogs, streaming audiovisual clips, low-resolution images, and narrative text describing its audiovisual archival materials are free. Audiovisual assets and other documents will be embedded into the Russian educational system, and will be offered to the Russian departments of universities worldwide.
